Did He Have a Stroke?… Jill Biden’s Memoir Sparks Anger Among Democrats
The new memoir by Jill Biden has attracted attention not only because of its content but also because it has triggered a wave of criticism within the Democratic Party, which had hoped to move beyond the 2024 presidential election.
In her new book, “A View from the West Wing: A Memoir,” excerpts of which have been published online, the former First Lady presents her account of the events leading up to her husband Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race. She reveals that she felt frightened while watching his debate performance against Donald Trump and even wondered at one point whether he had suffered a serious medical emergency.
Anger Within Democratic Circles
According to the American news outlet Axios, many former Biden aides believe that the book does not benefit the Democratic Party and reflects a lack of sensitivity to the political consequences of that period.
As reported by Axios, several former officials from the Biden administration and campaign expressed frustration with the timing of the book’s publication. They argue that the party is still attempting to recover from the consequences of its defeat in the 2024 election, while the memoir revives debates that many preferred to leave behind.
The report notes that the book “reopens a deep wound for many Democrats who believe that the Biden family damaged their credibility with voters by insisting that Joe Biden was fit enough to seek reelection in 2024 when he was not, and by pushing the party to publicly defend his fitness for office.”
According to the report, many Democrats also feel that the Biden family has yet to provide a clear explanation for its actions and that Jill Biden’s new memoir forms part of a broader pattern of seeking excuses and assigning blame to others. Many are reportedly “deeply frustrated by the former First Lady’s return to the public spotlight.”
The report further states that former Biden aides harbor “significant frustration and deep skepticism” regarding Jill Biden’s version of events surrounding her husband’s age and the debate that ultimately led to his withdrawal from the presidential race.
In this context, a former Biden administration official stated: “The common thread between her book and the book by Kamala Harris is that they blame everyone except themselves for the loss.”
Another former senior Biden administration official remarked: “President Biden already has a meaningful legacy that deserves recognition. He led the country through the pandemic and signed legislation that changed people’s lives. Why does he continue to undermine that legacy himself?”
Even Biden’s former spokesperson, Andrew Bates, one of his strongest defenders, told the New York Post that he does not believe the book will affect the upcoming midterm elections. Nevertheless, he remains angry about the 2024 defeat and sees “no reason to reopen this painful discussion for the party publicly at this particular moment.”
Jill Biden’s Account
Jill Biden says that she felt “afraid” while watching her husband’s disastrous debate performance against then-Republican candidate Donald Trump.
She writes in her book: “Did he have a stroke? It felt as though we were watching an AI-generated holographic version of the man we knew, and the image appeared blurred. Had he been medicated?”
Axios notes that these remarks contradict what Joe Biden’s senior advisers maintained both at the time and afterward: that the debate had gone poorly, but that the media and the Democratic Party had overreacted.
Former Biden aides have also criticized Jill Biden’s previous insistence that her husband had not experienced age-related decline, while her current comments suggest that she herself may not have been entirely certain.
Reflecting on this issue, she writes in her memoir: “Had he become older than the job required without my noticing it? I did not think so, but was I objective enough to know for sure?”
