Formation of a New Armed Group to Confront Ahmed Al-Sharaa – Details

A former member of the Syrian regime, Miqdad Fatiha, has announced the formation of an armed organization aimed at opposing the new Syrian administration led by President Ahmed Al-Sharaa.

On Thursday, activists shared a video on social media showing Fatiha announcing the establishment of the brigade “Coastal Shield” from the mountains of Latakia. This initiative seeks to counter what he described as al-Joulani’s violations” on the Syrian coast.

Fatiha, a former volunteer in the Republican Guard, one of the most powerful and well-equipped units of the former regime, threatened to launch military operations against members of the military operations and public security administrations. He stated that the formation of this brigade was “a response to repeated attacks against members of the Alawite community in coastal Syrian cities.”

Through his newly formed brigade, Fatiha asserted that they would be responsible for any targeting of members of the military operations and security administrations, both within and beyond the coastal Syrian regions.

He also issued a call to members of the Alawite community, urging them not to surrender their weapons and warning them against “attempts to disarm them under various pretexts, including security sweeps.”

He encouraged residents to confront and eliminate any individuals attempting to enter their villages, stating that he would “lead military operations in defense of the homeland and the community,” according to the video.

According to previous news reports, Miqdad Fatiha, also known as Abu Jaafar, is a former volunteer in the Republican Guard, a military unit that was once part of the deposed regime’s army.

Earlier videos of the leader of this newly formed organization had circulated, in which he urged security forces in the Syrian coastal region to protect civilians and put an end to the ongoing waves of theft and kidnappings affecting citizens.

Fatiha’s announcement of the “Coastal Shield” group is not the first such formation in Syria following the fall of Bashar Al-Assad’s regime and the rise of Ahmed Al-Sharaa to power. Late last year, another group named the “Syrian Resistance in the Coast” was formed, consisting of members from Damascus, the coastal regions, and other cities.
