Netflix: Platform expands password sharing restrictions
Netflix is cracking down on password sharing. On Tuesday, May 23, the streaming giant announced it is expanding its restrictions on account sharing. This decision is expected to impact users in the US, France and around 100 other countries. Users affected by these measures will no longer be able to share their access codes with non-household members.
“Anyone living in this home can watch Netflix anywhere, whether at home, on the go, or on vacation, and enjoy new features like profile transfer and access and device management,” Netflix said in a statement. Subscription users will therefore have to live under the same roof.
This announcement is part of a strategy to diversify revenues. The system has been in place for a year in Canada. American households will have to pay an extra $8 a month to let a “guest” use their account. For French users, code-sharing should be charged EUR 5.99.
