Pompeo: The sanctions’ goal is to prevent Russia from receiving substantial revenue, access, and influence

US Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo talked with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu to discuss the imposition of sanctions on December 14 by the US on its NATO Ally Turkey because it purchased the Russian-made S-400 missile defense system, as required under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA).

Secretary Pompeo explained to Foreign Minister Cavusoglu that Turkey’s procurement of the S-400 system threatens US personnel and military technology security and help Russian to access to the Turkish armed forces and defense industry.

He also confirmed that the sanctions’ objective is to avoid Russia from receiving substantial revenue, access, and influence and not undermine Turkey’s military abilities or combat readiness or any other US Ally or partner.

Secretary Pompeo also called Turkey to resolve the S-400 matter in a way compatible with our decades-long history of defense-sector cooperation and to re-engagement to its NATO obligations to acquire NATO-interoperable weaponry.
