South Africa: 21 young people died in a bar after suffocation

They were 14 to 20 years old and were killed on the night of June 25 to 26 in the Enyobeni bar in Scenery Park Township, an impoverished suburb of East London.

On Thursday, 1 September, the South African health services informed the families of the 21 young people who died in mysterious conditions in an informal bar at the end of June that they attributed the cause of their death to “asphyxiation”.

“They called the 21 families to tell us what happened. They are now telling us that it is asphyxiation,” said the father of one of the victims, Xolani Malangeni, who was called by AFP. “Before, they told us it was poisoning,” he added angrily. It’s wrong, it’s a false report. ”

His daughter, Esinako Sanarhana, 17, died on the night of June 25-26 at a popular beverage outlet in a poor suburb of East London (south). A total of 21 youths, aged 14 to 20, were killed in the Enyobeni bar in Scenery Park Township.

Contacted by AFP, the Eastern Cape Province Department of Health confirmed that it was receiving the families to inform them of the circumstances of their child’s death. However, the Department has not confirmed the cause of death, citing a duty of “confidentiality”.

No apparent injury

Most of the bodies were found on 26 June in the bar, with no apparent injuries. The authorities had ruled out the possibility of a tragedy caused by a mass movement. Autopsies were conducted.

Survivors had evoked “a strong smell,” people collapsing on the ground. A total of 31 people were taken to hospital complaining of vomiting, headache, back and chest pain.

Other families also told local media that they had been informed that their child had died from asphyxiation. None of them received toxicological reports. “They told us that if we wanted to, we had to go to court to ask for it,” Plagues Mr. Malangeni.
