The Taliban have no information about al-Zawahiri’s presence in Afghanistan
The spokesman of the Afghan Taliban government, Zabihullah Mujahid, denied on Saturday that the movement had found the body of Al-Qaeda leader Ayman Al-Zawahiri, who was killed by the United States by a drone plane in Kabul last Sunday.
“This matter is under investigation, and we did not find any bodies after the announcement of his death,” Zabihullah Mujahid told the US-funded Iranian opposition Radio Farda website about the killing of al-Zawahiri.
“The explosives used in this attack completely destroyed everything,” he said.
The United States said Sunday through its president Joe Biden that it managed to assassinate al-Zawahiri with a drone when his house in Kabul was targeted.
The Taliban condemned the attack without confirming the death of al-Zawahiri, saying “they are not aware of al-Zawahiri’s presence in Afghanistan,” adding that “Washington’s military operation in Afghanistan is a violation of the Doha agreement of 2021.”
There was no comment from the United States on Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid’s claim that Zawahiri’s body had not been found.
Washington accused the Taliban government of collaborating with al-Qaeda and sheltering the leaders of that terrorist organization. After the killing of Osama bin Laden in Pakistan in 2011, al-Zawahiri became the leader of al-Qaeda.
