Washington exposes Algeria’s falsification of its position on the Moroccan Sahara
The U.S. Embassy in Algeria, on its official website, publishes the full dialogue of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, reaffirming his country's support for Morocco's realistic proposal for autonomy as the sole way to resolve the fabricated conflict in the Sahara
With Morocco‘s continued successes in gaining international recognition for its full sovereignty over its territories, Algerian media, lacking ways to cover Rabat’s diplomatic achievements, resorts to media deception. This includes distorting statements by the U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary for North African Affairs, Joshua Harris, who explicitly reiterated his country’s support for Morocco on the Sahara issue.
The U.S. State Department denied the claims circulated by Algerian media, affirming, through the publication of the full dialogue in English, that Harris described the Moroccan autonomy initiative as “serious, strong, and realistic.”
In the original dialogue, Harris emphasized that the United States considers the Moroccan autonomy proposal “serious, strong, and realistic,” representing one of the possible ways to meet the aspirations of the region’s people. He stated that peace cannot be imposed by an external party.
Harris further noted the role of the Personal Envoy, Staffan de Mistura, and the importance of the UN political process in achieving a permanent result. He expressed the need for the success of the Personal Envoy’s efforts, returning to Algeria for further consultations on practical steps for the success of the UN political process.
Algerian media’s misinformation and distortion of statements by Western officials reflect the confusion within Algerian diplomacy. Contrary to claims by “Algeria Now” regarding Harris‘ support for the separatist argument, the original dialogue confirms the U.S. official’s statement that the United States seeks a permanent and just political solution to the Sahara issue.
The U.S. administration, led by Joe Biden, chose to deepen talks with the parties to the conflict through a new round of consultations in Algeria and Morocco, aiming to find solutions without further delay. According to a statement from the U.S. State Department, Deputy Assistant Secretary Joshua Harris met with Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf in Algiers, emphasizing joint efforts to enhance regional peace and security.
It seems that the misinformation and forgery practiced by Algerian media reflect the confusion in Algerian diplomacy. Most Algerian media outlets align against Morocco, resorting to negative characterizations and downplaying its strength and mocking its institutions. Meanwhile, Morocco continues to achieve internal and external accomplishments through developmental projects and investments, impacting all aspects of life.
The Moroccan Sahara has consistently been the focus of Moroccan foreign policy, with efforts to persuade other countries to recognize the region as Moroccan territory, countering the claims of the Polisario separatist group, supported by Algeria.
In December, former U.S. President Donald Trump officially recognized Moroccan sovereignty over the region, culminating Rabat’s efforts. The current U.S. administration under Joe Biden has chosen to deepen talks with the conflicting parties, conducting a second round of consultations in Algeria and Morocco to find a compatible political solution to the Sahara conflict.
The U.S. State Department emphasized that Deputy Assistant Secretary Joshua Harris‘s visit aims to begin consultations with both countries, discussing regional peace and intensifying the UN political process for a timely political solution to the Sahara issue.
