Google Maps Adds Artificial Intelligence Features

Google has announced the addition of revolutionary artificial intelligence technology to its digital mapping service, launched nearly 20 years ago as part of its efforts to expand into new areas.

Recently, Google Maps surpassed 2 billion monthly users worldwide for the first time, a milestone that illustrates how much people rely on the service for directions during daily commutes and trips to new places.

With the introduction of “Gemini,” Google‘s AI technology, maps are now set to become entertainment guides in addition to navigation tools, according to The Hindu.

Starting this week, in the United States only, users will be able to interact with Google Maps to request suggestions on things to do around specific locations within a neighborhood or city and receive lists of nearby restaurants and other tourist sites.

The new features will also provide more detailed information on parking options near a chosen destination, along with walking directions for users to follow after leaving their car.

Miriam Daniel, General Manager of Google Maps, told reporters during a preview of the features in Palo Alto, California: “We are entering a new era of maps. We’re working to make it easier for people to navigate and explore the world.”

In another AI development, Google Maps will allow third-party developers to leverage the language models powering the “Gemini” technology to ask questions about specific destinations, such as apartments or restaurants, and receive answers within seconds.

Additionally, Google’s Waze app, focused exclusively on real-time driving directions, will also use artificial intelligence to provide a conversation mode for its roughly 180 million monthly users, allowing them to report road hazards and other issues that may impact travel times.
