Hezbollah in the sights of Syrian security: a sabotage operation foiled and a cell arrested

A sabotage plot at the heart of the capital, Damascus, was announced as foiled by the Syrian Ministry of Interior following a security operation described as precise and preemptive, which resulted in the dismantling of an explosive device and the arrest of members of a cell linked to the party.

According to an official statement published by the Syrian Ministry of Interior on its X account, the Counter-Terrorism Directorate, in cooperation with the Internal Security Command of the Damascus countryside, succeeded in tracking suspicious movements within the capital. The forces then managed to identify a woman belonging to the cell as she attempted to plant an explosive device in front of the residence of a religious figure near the Maronite church in the Bab Touma area.

The ministry stated that the rapid intervention enabled the device to be defused before it exploded, without causing any injuries or damage, and that all five members of the cell were arrested.

Direct link and external training

Preliminary investigations revealed a direct connection between the cell and Hezbollah, with its members having received specialized military training abroad, including techniques for planting explosive devices.

Authorities confirmed that investigations are ongoing to determine the full scope of the network and the parties connected to it, in preparation for referring those involved to the competent judiciary.

Previous operations in Syria

This operation comes after a previous announcement in February regarding the dismantling of another cell in Damascus that was responsible for attacks targeting the Al-Mazzeh district and its surroundings using rockets and drones.

Investigations at the time indicated that the weapons used, including launch platforms and drones, originated from Hezbollah, reinforcing indications of organized activity inside the country.

Extensions beyond borders

In parallel with these developments, recent periods have witnessed the dismantling of cells linked to the party in several countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Bahrain, reflecting the widening scope of such activity.
