The war in Ukraine reaches NATO’s borders: Russian drone debris hits Romania

Romania announced that it had found debris from Russian drones on its territory following a nighttime attack targeting Ukraine, causing material damage without any reported injuries.

The Russian escalation has thus reached the borders of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, as Kyiv revealed a large-scale Russian aerial attack involving more than 660 drones and missiles.

Material damage in Romania for the first time

The Romanian Ministry of Defense stated that the debris fell in the city of Galați, in the southeast of the country, causing damage to an annex of a house and to an electricity pole, with no casualties reported.

It clarified that this incident marks the first case resulting in material damage, despite repeated instances in recent months of fragments from Russian drones falling on Romanian territory.

In a statement, the ministry said: “The Ministry of Defense strongly condemns the irresponsible actions committed by the Russian Federation and affirms that these actions represent a new challenge to regional security and stability in the Black Sea area.”

The statement added: “These incidents demonstrate the Russian Federation’s disregard for the rules of international law. They not only endanger the safety of Romanian citizens but also threaten the collective security of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.”

Romania, a member of NATO and the European Union, shares a 650-kilometer land border with Ukraine and has experienced repeated violations of its airspace alongside Russian attacks on Ukrainian ports located on the Danube River.

A large-scale Russian attack on Ukraine

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian Air Force announced that Russia had carried out a massive aerial attack overnight, using 619 drones and 47 missiles, targeting several regions, with strikes concentrated on the Dnipro region in the southeast of the country.

It added that air defenses managed to shoot down 580 drones and 30 missiles, in one of the largest aerial attacks since the beginning of the military escalation.
