Message to the Kremlin: Zelensky Proposes a Meeting with Putin as Moscow Opens Its Doors

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has proposed a face-to-face meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, expressing his readiness to accept a “comprehensive ceasefire.”

In his message, Zelensky stated: “Ukraine proposes ending this war through direct dialogue between us and you. I am proposing a meeting.”

He added: “Ukraine is prepared to observe a full ceasefire throughout the entire period of negotiations.”

The Kremlin responded by saying that the Ukrainian president would be welcome to meet his Russian counterpart in Moscow “at any time.”

Official media quoted Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov as saying: “Zelensky can come to Moscow at any time,” adding that Putin had not yet reviewed the Ukrainian president’s message.

Zelensky’s Message

In his letter, Zelensky said that the majority of Russians were tired of Ukrainian missile and drone attacks, inflation, and fuel shortages, and that they were ready for peace.

He added: “If you do not come to the conclusion yourself that the time has come to end this war, Ukraine will continue fighting for its survival.”

He also proposed a comprehensive exchange of all prisoners of war held by both sides, arguing that such a step could serve as “a good prelude to ending the war.”

The proposal for a full prisoner exchange was presented as a confidence-building measure that could help pave the way toward a broader settlement of the conflict.

The open letter represents one of the few occasions on which Zelensky has addressed Vladimir Putin directly since the outbreak of the war in February 2022.

Negotiations between Russia and Ukraine have remained stalled for months, particularly as the United States, which has played a mediating role, has shifted much of its attention toward the conflict with Iran.

Trump’s Response

U.S. President Donald Trump quickly commented on these developments.

Speaking to reporters, he said: “I’m pleased that they may be talking about holding a meeting. I believe we have played a major role in that.”

He added: “I think it would be a wonderful thing if they met.”
