Members of an Israeli Special Forces Unit Killed in an Ambush in Gaza
The Israeli military intervened from the air with more than 10 fighter aircraft of different types to rescue the targeted security team, resulting in civilian deaths and injuries.
Several members of an Israeli special forces unit were killed and around 20 Palestinians, including children, were wounded, while three Palestinians were killed, during a field escalation that followed the discovery of the Israeli force while it was carrying out a special security mission in the Al-Katiba area, west of Gaza City.
According to Ismail Al-Thawabta, director general of the Government Media Office in Gaza, the Israeli force came under attack after its presence was discovered in an area where locally armed groups supported by Israel operate. This prompted the Israeli military to launch intensive airstrikes to secure its forces and eliminate the threat they were facing.
More than 10 fighter aircraft and drones participated in the strikes, which amounted to approximately 16 airstrikes in less than half an hour and targeted the vicinity of Al-Katiba, a densely populated area hosting displaced people and several civilian facilities, including the American hospital and university institutions.
The Israeli military announced that it had targeted sites that it said posed a threat to its forces, without specifying the nature of those threats or the parties involved in the confrontation. The Israeli Broadcasting Authority also did not clarify whether the confrontation took place directly between Israeli forces and their adversaries or involved locally armed groups operating in the area.
These developments raise concerns about a new escalation that could threaten the stability of the ceasefire, particularly as the incident highlights the continuation of Israeli security operations inside areas that are supposed to be subject to the arrangements established under the agreement.
The operation also points to an expansion of the confrontation between Palestinian factions and locally armed groups supported by Israel. In recent weeks, the factions have intensified attacks against these groups, which operate in various parts of the Gaza Strip, prompting Israel to intervene directly whenever these networks come under pressure or face a threat.
The development is particularly significant because of the nature of the Israeli mission, which was conducted outside the framework of conventional military operations. Deploying a special forces unit to carry out a security mission and then providing it with extensive air cover after its presence was discovered reflects an increasing reliance on limited ground operations and intelligence activity alongside aerial bombardment.
The confrontation comes amid a growing number of violations since the ceasefire agreement came into effect. According to the available figures, subsequent violations of the agreement have resulted in 1,318 Palestinians being killed and 4,375 others being wounded, highlighting the widening gap between the continuation of the truce at the political level and the deteriorating situation on the ground.
The Al-Katiba incident raises concerns that clashes between Palestinian factions and locally armed groups could become an additional factor destabilizing the truce, particularly if Israel continues to intervene militarily and directly to protect these groups or secure their operations.
The latest escalation in Gaza therefore adds a new dimension to the situation on the ground. The confrontation is no longer limited to bombardment and direct clashes but now also involves special security operations and locally armed networks, making any new escalation more difficult to contain and increasing the risk of the existing arrangements collapsing.
