Two Scenarios Could Draw Israel Back into Confrontation with Iran as Military Preparations Intensify

“Either Iran attacks Israel, or Washington asks Israel to join the campaign.” These are the two scenarios that could once again draw Israel into a direct confrontation with Iran.

Amid continued uncertainty, extensive preparations are underway both behind the scenes and in public. Israel has reportedly compiled a confidential list of Iranian targets it intends to strike, while Israeli military aircraft continue arriving across the country.

Israeli sources believe the coming days will be decisive in determining the direction of events. Some analysts also argue that the current Israeli government may see military escalation as politically advantageous ahead of the general elections scheduled for October 27.

According to a report published Sunday by Yedioth Ahronoth, “despite the growing number of warning signs, Israeli officials are not rushing to conclude that another war is inevitable, particularly one that would necessarily involve Israel.”

The newspaper added that “the prevailing assessment within Israel’s defense establishment is that Iran is currently unwilling to open a direct front against Israel, partly because of the damage it sustained during the previous confrontation.”

However, it noted that “officials familiar with the matter stress that this remains only an assessment and that developments in the Middle East can change rapidly.”

According to the newspaper, “another major concern among Israel’s political and military leadership is the possibility of becoming involved in a renewed U.S. military campaign.”

Israeli officials told the newspaper that “Washington has so far preferred to conduct operations independently, even when Israel expressed its willingness to assist or participate.”

Could the conflict expand?

The report continued: “The United States blocked Israeli participation despite close military coordination between the two countries. Washington sought to minimize the risk of expanding the conflict and prevent Iran from portraying the fighting as a joint American-Israeli war.” Nevertheless, it emphasized that “this approach may not be permanent.”

It added: “If the Pentagon concludes that Israeli capabilities are essential to achieving operational objectives—whether because of the Israeli Air Force’s experience or Israel’s unique intelligence and military assets—that decision could change quickly.”

The report further noted: “Even if Israel does not directly participate in a U.S. operation, it will not necessarily remain outside the danger zone. Israeli defense officials are preparing for the possibility that Iran could target Israel even if it is not directly involved in American strikes.”

It also stated: “Any major Israeli offensive in Lebanon could prompt Iran to launch attacks against Israel, making Israel’s involvement in the broader conflict almost inevitable.”

Despite mounting indications of American military preparations, Israeli officials remain cautious about predicting another escalation.

The newspaper concluded: “At this stage, Washington appears to be preparing and refining operational options. However, any change—whether an American decision, new intelligence assessments, or an unexpected Iranian move—could quickly overturn the assumption that Israel will remain outside the confrontation.”

A senior Israeli official stated: “Israel may be forced to join the war. The memorandum of understanding is no longer in effect, and Iran is attacking neighboring countries. Israel must prepare for any attempt to strike us. If that happens, they will pay a heavy price. We will not stop as we did last time.”

Return of aerial refueling aircraft

As preparations continue for possible renewed escalation, the United States is deploying aerial refueling aircraft and fighter jets to Israel.

American personnel initially sought to remain at Ben Gurion Airport because of its proximity to Tel Aviv, its vibrant nightlife, and the Mediterranean coast. However, as confirmed by the Israeli military, the refueling aircraft will instead be stationed at Israeli Air Force bases.

Transportation arrangements are currently being organized between southern Israeli air bases and Tel Aviv to facilitate crew movements during off-duty hours. In addition to dozens of refueling aircraft—some of which have already arrived—fighter aircraft are also being transferred to Israel, according to Yedioth Ahronoth.

Meanwhile, the Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation reported on Sunday that “some of the American fighter jets being deployed to the Middle East are expected to be stationed at Israeli air bases as part of the broader reinforcement of the U.S. military presence in the region amid escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran.”

The broadcaster added that the United States “has begun deploying dozens of additional fighter aircraft to the Middle East, alongside aerial refueling planes, in response to rising tensions with Iran and preparations for the possibility of further escalation.”

According to the report, U.S. F-16 fighter jets are expected to arrive at Israeli air bases.

An American official stated that the reinforcements include squadrons of F-35 and F-16 fighters, noting that their deployment is expected to be completed within the coming days alongside the necessary logistical preparations.

The broadcaster further reported that the U.S. administration has informed Israel of its intention to adjust its “regional deployment” by sending additional aerial refueling aircraft as part of President Donald Trump’s plan to strengthen long-range air-refueling capabilities.

The deployment involves dozens of aircraft intended to support potential military operations against Iran. Some have already landed at Ovda Air Base in southern Israel after arriving from Qatar, while additional aircraft are expected to arrive at other regional air bases.

Expansion of the U.S. military presence

According to the newspaper, “the arrival of refueling aircraft and fighter jets in Israel, Washington’s expanded travel advisories, and statements by senior officials reflecting growing impatience following the deaths of American soldiers all suggest that, although Israel may initially remain outside any renewed American campaign, significant military preparations are underway.”

It added that “recent developments indicate that the United States is significantly strengthening its readiness for renewed escalation with Iran, potentially leading to a return to full-scale conflict.”

The deployment of additional American forces, the arrival of refueling aircraft and fighter jets, strengthened travel warnings, and operational adjustments based on lessons learned from previous conflicts all point to extensive military preparations.

The newspaper concluded that “any escalation initiated by Washington before the U.S. midterm elections would likely be carefully managed. Nevertheless, conducting even a limited confrontation with Iran remains an exceptionally complex undertaking.”

Intensified Israeli-American coordination

Meanwhile, an Israeli military source told the Walla news website: “As additional American forces arrive in the Middle East, coordination between the Israeli and American militaries will naturally intensify in order to shorten the transition time from routine operations to emergency readiness.”

Another senior Israeli security source familiar with discussions with the U.S. Department of Defense stated that “dozens of American aerial refueling units will now be distributed between Israeli military bases and Ramon Airport in southern Israel.”

The source added: “If the United States expands its operations against Iran to the point where additional refueling assets are required, some aircraft may eventually be stationed at Ben Gurion Airport despite the current agreement limiting their presence there.”

An Israeli Air Force source also stated that the United States plans to deploy approximately one hundred aerial refueling assets across Israel.

According to the source, “as part of strengthening the American military posture in the Middle East and Israel, the U.S. military is redeploying F-35 fighters from the United Kingdom and F-15 aircraft from Germany, along with specialized aircraft equipped for air-defense suppression and counter-radar missions. The objective is to weaken the capabilities of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which has been working continuously to restore its military systems, including accelerating the production of surface-to-air and surface-to-surface missiles.”
