Execution of 21 people and arrest of 4,000 in Iran since the start of the war
A heavy toll from the “policy of executions” adopted by the Iranian regime against its opponents since the beginning of the war in the region.
According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, 21 people have been executed and more than 4,000 arrested in Iran for political reasons or matters related to national security since the beginning of the war in the Middle East.
The UN agency stated in a statement on Wednesday that since the outbreak of the war with the US-Israeli attacks on Iran on February 28, “at least nine people linked to the protests that took place in January 2026 were executed, ten people suspected of belonging to opposition groups were executed, and two were executed on charges of espionage.”
The High Commissioner’s office clarified that during this period, more than 4,000 people were arrested on “charges related to national security.”
A joint report recently issued by Iran Human Rights and the Paris-based organization Together Against the Death Penalty states that Iranian authorities executed at least 1,639 people in 2025, the highest figure since 1989.
