As the ongoing war in Sudan enters its fourth month, and with Arab and foreign countries preparing to end the ceasefire between the Sudanese army led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces under the auspices of Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.

Representatives of the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces have returned to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to resume talks following their suspension last month by American and Saudi officials after a series of repeated ceasefire violations.

Talks in Jeddah

The talks in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, come after the Sudan’s neighboring countries’ summit hosted by Egypt in the past two days, amid the continued crisis in Sudan and the intense fighting that has claimed the lives of at least 3,000 people and displaced over three million people since it began on April 15.

Therefore, the two parties have returned to the negotiation table in Jeddah after a month and a half of hiatus. Informed sources said that representatives of the Sudanese army have returned to Jeddah in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for talks with the Rapid Support Forces, and the Saudi delegation indicates the army’s return to diplomatic efforts after boycotting the talks in Addis Ababa last week.

Prior to the suspension of the Jeddah talks last month, American mediators became increasingly frustrated with both sides’ reluctance to work towards a permanent ceasefire.

Jeddah Summit is Serious and Pivotal

Sudanese political researcher and writer Mohammed Elias said: The Riyadh Summit is serious and will be held between the conflicting parties, and it is a pivotal summit because the parties have realized that the ongoing war is futile, and negotiations must take place to achieve a ceasefire and return to the situation before April 15. He believes that the summit will succeed this time because both parties have the will, power, and determination to realize the ongoing ceasefire and exit the futile scene now.

Elias added: The ongoing war has cast negative shadows on the country, leading to numerous collapses and security breakdowns. This confirms the suffering of the Sudanese people due to the war, which has caused the fragmentation and disintegration of the country, plunging it into a comprehensive civil war.

Seeking a Politically Acceptable Solution

On the other hand, Sudanese political researcher Shauqi Abdel Azim said: The renewed hosting of a summit in Jeddah that brings together delegations from the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces is an attempt to reach proposals acceptable to the conflicting parties. This meeting comes after the summit of Sudan’s neighboring countries, which has proven its results in resolving the crisis in Sudan, and the summit of finding a solution that failed to resolve the conflict or mediate between the parties.

Abdel Azim added: Saudi Arabia and the United States are trying to resolve the Sudan conflict and mitigate its devastating effects, which have destroyed everything. Additionally, it has had a significant impact on the neighboring countries of Sudan, greatly affecting them due to the large number of displaced persons and refugees.
