Jordanian woman sentenced to 3 years in prison for selling her baby
The Criminal Court of Al-Mafraq Governorate in Jordan has sentenced a woman to 3 years in prison for selling her “illegitimate” infant daughter, and fined her 5,000 dinars (equivalent to $7,050), while acquitting other defendants in the same case due to insufficient evidence.
The verdict was upheld by the appellate courts of Irbid and Cassation after convicting the defendant of human trafficking and attempted trafficking.
According to local newspaper “Al-Ghad,” the defendant was married and had two children before her husband divorced her, and her family abandoned her due to disagreements with her. Later, the defendant met a woman and her son and moved in with them.
Later on, the defendant had an illegitimate relationship with the woman’s son, which resulted in the birth of a daughter. At that point, the young man’s mother offered the defendant to sell her daughter to a couple who wanted to adopt her, as they were unable to have children, for a sum of two thousand dinars ($2,820). The defendant agreed to sell her daughter and handed her over to the young man’s mother, while the couple who adopted the girl did not register her in the civil registry. She was raised in their home and given the name “Joud.”
After continuing her relationship with the young man, the defendant became pregnant again, and she decided to inform her friend of her desire to sell the fetus after birth, after telling her that she had sold her first child from the same relationship. The friend then informed the Family Protection Administration of the incident, leading to the defendant’s arrest.
The defendant confessed in court to selling her first daughter, justifying her actions by her desire for money.
