Eight years since the assassination of “Belaid”… A memory surrounding the Tunisian Fraternity
In a troubled context similar to that which was assassinated 8 years ago, Tunisia is relaunching, on Saturday, the anniversary of the assassination of left-wing leader Chokri Belaid.
A political crisis, terrorist threats, and social tensions…a triple that governs the Tunisian scene and draws confused coordinates that bring back in the memory of Tunisians the scene before February 6, 2013, a day that marked a turning point in the contemporary history of the country.
That day, Chokri Belaid was jumping up the stairs of the building towards his car parked in his yard in one of the suburbs of the capital, behind the wheel, the driver was waiting for him, and as soon as he opened the door and sat down on the next seat, the bullets he received didn’t even give him time to greet the drowned man in shock at the horror of what he saw.
The memory frightens the Brotherhood
Chokri Belaid, a leftist leader who did not hesitate to criticize the Brotherhood, exposing their agenda and their schizophrenia, has become a symbol that terrifies the living and dead organization.
The Tunisian General Labor Union, Tunisia’s largest labor center, and 66 other local organizations intend to hold a mass rally on Habib Bourguiba Street today to condemn Belaid’s assassination, and to demand disclosure of who was behind the operation that took place during the Brotherhood’s time.
According to the statements of the left leaders of Al-Ain Al-Akhbariya, the march will also reveal the logic of violence, hate speech and restrictions on freedoms in Tunisia by the movement of the Brothers “Ennahda” since 2012.
The United Democratic Party Known by the acronym “Al-Watad”, the party that Belaid led until his assassination, he issued a statement read by Al-Ain Al-Akhbaria, in which he renewed his demand to reveal the truth about the assassination of its leader, and other political assassinations like the nationalist Muhammad Al-Brahmi (assassinated on July 25, 2013), and the terrorist operations which targeted military and security establishments.
In their statement, the party condemned the “frantic efforts of the Ennahda movement to block the doors of truth and disrupt its path in the discovery of cases of terrorism” which Tunisia has witnessed since 2011, in light of the postponement of the Tunisian justice, last Friday, to hear the case of the assassination of Belaid until May 29.
For his part, Zuhair Hamdi, secretary general of the Popular Movement with nationalist views, told Al-Ain Al-Akhbariya: “The regime responsible for the assassination of the martyr faces today a new uprising from popular groups and of youth in Tunisia”, referring to the Fraternity.
Hamdi held the Muslim Brotherhood Movement responsible for the corruption and collapse of the country’s political, economic, social, cultural and security systems, and for efforts to hide the truth about the murder, calling on all forces to Tunisia to face the unjust and corrupt rules of the brothers.
Secret device

The secret organization of the Brotherhood fell into the trap of the defense committee of Chokri Belaid and Mohamed Brahmi (which includes more than 100 lawyers), where secret contacts were revealed between the head of the Brotherhood Rashid Ghannouchi and the author of the assassination of Belaid, Kamal al-Qadqadi, a few days before the left leader was targeted.
Lawyer Bashir Al-Maslamani notes that Abdulaziz Al-Daghasni, Ghannouchi’s son-in-law, supervised the coordination between the Tunisian and Egyptian brotherhood during this period, according to official documents filed with the Tunisian justice since 2018.
Al-Maslamani pointed out to Al-Ain Al-Akhbariya that the Brotherhood is directly responsible for Belaid’s assassination, because his voice was strong against political obscurantism.
Security sources, who refused to reveal his identity, also confirmed to Al-Ain Al-Akhbaria that the Tunisian brothers have high-quality listening devices, which are bag-shaped equipment capable of taking 4,000 calls at the same time, and are usually transported in closed cars.
