The U.S. Ambassador to Yemen, Steven Fagin, expressed his astonishment at the refusal of Marib’s Muslim Brotherhood-controlled authorities to transfer oil and gas revenues to the central bank. This remark was made during his meeting with the Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council, Dr. Rashad Al-Alimi, and Prime Minister Dr. Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak.

According to sources, the U.S. ambassador had previously discussed with Al-Alimi and Bin Mubarak the necessity for Marib, under the control of the Muslim Brotherhood, to fulfill its obligation to transfer oil revenues to the central bank. An agreement was reached on the importance of this measure to support economic stability, making the continued refusal and lack of implementation surprising, according to Al-Omana newspaper.

The local authorities in Marib, led by Governor and Presidential Leadership Council member Sultan Al-Arada, continue to embezzle oil and gas revenues, transferring them to personal accounts for investment abroad.

Al-Arada’s administration refuses to transfer all oil and gas revenues from Marib to the Central Bank of Yemen, located in the interim capital, Aden, openly defying the legitimacy of the Presidential Leadership Council.

A team of experts from the United Nations Security Council has uncovered massive corruption in Yemen, involving several officials from the legitimate government, including the embezzlement of Marib’s revenues under the control of the Al-Islah party, Yemen’s Muslim Brotherhood affiliate.

According to the UN expert report, reviewed accounting documents indicate that oil and gas revenues from Marib, amounting to billions of rials, were siphoned off by Al-Islah, while the local population suffers from a severe lack of basic services.

The UN report also states that Al-Islah has used these funds to finance and build a military force affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood.

Additionally, the UN expert team confirmed receiving evidence of the involvement of Marib authorities and military leaders in corruption, smuggling of petroleum derivatives, and the illegal export of crude oil. These funds were used for personal enrichment and to finance military camps operating outside the framework of government legitimacy.
