Pope Francis’ Doctor: His Condition is Stable, and He is Not Facing ‘Risk of Death’

Dr. Sergio Alfieri, a member of the medical team treating Pope Francis, confirmed that the Pope is not at risk of death despite suffering from bilateral pneumonia. However, he has not yet fully recovered, and his health condition could change.

During a press conference on Friday, Alfieri clarified that while the Pope is not entirely “out of danger,” he remains in a stable condition, dismissing any imminent threat to his life.

The 88-year-old Pope was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on February 14 after experiencing breathing difficulties for several days. He has since been under treatment, monitored by a specialized medical team.

Bilateral pneumonia is a serious condition that can cause inflammation and fibrosis in the lungs, making breathing difficult.

However, doctors reported that the Pope has been able to get out of bed and sit on a chair to carry out some tasks. Nonetheless, they anticipate that he will remain hospitalized at least until next week.

Alfieri noted that the Pope no longer has the same strength as before due to his advanced age and medical history. However, he denied any signs of sepsis, a severe complication that can occur when an infection spreads throughout the body.

Despite this, he emphasized the need for continuous monitoring of his condition, as the infection could worsen at any time.
