Underestimating Iran’s air defense capabilities is placing Trump in a difficult position
The Speaker of the Iranian Parliament believes that the objective of the U.S.–Israeli war against Tehran has shifted from regime change to seeking the recovery of pilots.
Iranian and American officials said that Iranian forces are today, Saturday, searching for a missing American pilot who was aboard one of the two warplanes shot down over Iran and the Gulf, while two other pilots were rescued.
These two incidents highlight the persistent risks faced by American and Israeli aircraft over Iran as the war enters its sixth week, despite assurances from President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth that the forces have full control of the airspace.
The possibility that an American soldier may still be alive and on the run in Iran increases the risks for Washington in a conflict that lacks broad domestic public support and shows no signs of ending soon.
Officials from both countries said that Iranian fire shot down a two-seat U.S. F-15E fighter jet, while two American officials stated that the pilot ejected from an A-10 Warthog attack aircraft hit by Iranian fire before crashing in Kuwait.
They added that two Black Hawk helicopters involved in the search for the missing pilot were struck by Iranian fire but managed to exit the country’s airspace. The extent of the crews’ injuries remains unclear.
The Revolutionary Guards said they are patrolling an area near the crash site in southwestern Iran. The regional governor promised a medal of recognition to anyone who captures or kills “enemy forces.”
Iranians, who have been subjected to intense American bombardment since U.S. and Israeli strikes began on February 28, celebrated the downing of the two aircraft. The Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, wrote on X that the objective of the U.S. and Israeli war “has shifted from regime change” to seeking the recovery of pilots.
A senior U.S. administration official told Reuters that Trump is at the White House receiving the latest updates regarding the rescue operation.
The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday that Iran has formally informed mediators that it is not prepared to meet American officials in Islamabad in the coming days, and that Pakistan-led efforts to reach a ceasefire have reached a dead end.
Thousands have been killed during this war, which has triggered an energy crisis and threatens to inflict lasting damage on the global economy since the initial strikes that killed Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. U.S. Central Command states that the war has so far resulted in the deaths of 13 American soldiers and the injury of more than 300 others.
