Canada’s Six-Goal Rout Leaves Qatar on the Brink of World Cup Elimination
The heavy defeat represents a double setback for the Qatari national team, as Homam Al-Amin and Assim Madibo will miss the next match due to suspension.
Qatar suffered a crushing 6–0 defeat against Canada in a match marked by defensive collapse and the dismissal of two Qatari players, significantly damaging their hopes of reaching the knockout stages.
The Maroons entered the game seeking a positive result to strengthen their qualification prospects. However, they encountered a Canadian side that made full use of home advantage and strong crowd support, imposing its dominance from the opening minutes. Canada secured the first World Cup victory in its history and moved to the top of Group B with four points.
The hosts started strongly, with Kyle Larin opening the scoring in the 16th minute after converting a rebound from a Jonathan David effort that had been saved by goalkeeper Mahmoud Abu Nada. David then doubled Canada’s advantage in the 29th minute with a powerful strike from inside the penalty area.
Qatar suffered a major setback in the 34th minute when Homam Al-Amin was sent off for bringing down Tajon Buchanan. The decision sparked protests from the coaching staff led by Spanish manager Julen Lopetegui, who argued that the red card was unwarranted.
Just before halftime, Jonathan David scored Canada’s third goal, increasing the pressure on Qatar, which entered the second half with ten men. Matters worsened further when Assim Madibo received a red card following a reckless challenge that injured Canadian midfielder Ismaël Koné.
Reduced to nine players, Qatar completely lost its structure and conceded three more goals. Nathan Saliba added another before Mohammed Manei inadvertently scored an own goal. Jonathan David then completed a historic hat-trick, leading his country to the top of the group standings.
The heavy defeat constitutes a double blow for Qatar, not only because of the scoreline but also because both Homam Al-Amin and Assim Madibo will be unavailable for the next match due to suspension, making the team’s task in the final round even more difficult.
Qatar now sits at the bottom of Group B with just one point. Canada leads the standings with four points, level with Switzerland but ahead on goal difference. Meanwhile, Bosnia and Herzegovina still has an opportunity to revive its qualification hopes when it faces Qatar in the final group-stage match.
Despite the painful defeat, Julen Lopetegui insisted that his team would not give up. He stressed that Qatar deserved its place at the World Cup and would continue fighting until the very end.
Following the match, the Spanish coach stated that his side had faced an exceptionally strong opponent and described the first red card as the decisive turning point of the contest. He also argued that certain refereeing decisions had influenced the outcome, while emphasizing the importance of moving forward and focusing on physical and mental recovery ahead of the crucial encounter with Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Qatar must now secure victory in its final match, scheduled to take place in Seattle on June 24, if it wishes to keep alive its hopes of advancing to the next round. The challenge now appears significantly more difficult following the emphatic defeat against Canada.
