Switzerland’s Tactical Superiority Ends Algeria’s FIFA World Cup Campaign

The Swiss national team scores twice against Algeria to qualify for the Round of 16, where it will face the winner of the match between Colombia and Ghana.

Switzerland brought Algeria’s FIFA World Cup campaign to an end with a 2-0 victory at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver on Friday in the Round of 32, leaving the Algerian national team still waiting for its first-ever victory in the tournament’s knockout stages.

Switzerland took the lead early through Breel Embolo in the 10th minute before Dan Ndoye doubled the advantage in the opening minute of the second half.

The Swiss side, making its 13th appearance at the FIFA World Cup finals and having previously reached the quarterfinals on three occasions, most recently in 1954, advances to the Round of 16 for the second consecutive tournament. It will now face the winner of Saturday’s early-morning fixture between Colombia and Ghana.

Algeria, meanwhile, was appearing in the World Cup finals for the fifth time. The team matched its best-ever World Cup achievement by once again progressing beyond the group stage, a feat previously accomplished in 2014, before being eliminated in the Round of 32.

Despite Algeria enjoying clear superiority in possession, passing accuracy, and attacking intent during the opening stages, Switzerland took the lead in the 10th minute. Johan Manzambi broke down the left flank before delivering a low cross across the face of goal, where Breel Embolo converted past goalkeeper Luca Zidane.

The two sides exchanged attacking moves afterward, although neither goalkeeper was seriously tested, while Algeria continued to dominate possession.

Algerian players produced several attempts on Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, including efforts from Houssem Aouar and Farès Chaïbi, but the shots lacked sufficient power. In the closing moments of the first half, Mazza also came close, sending his effort just wide of the post.

At the other end, Switzerland threatened in the 37th minute when Denis Zakaria’s header sailed just over the crossbar.

Switzerland doubled its lead in the opening minute of the second half after Algeria’s defense failed to clear the ball effectively. The loose ball fell to Dan Ndoye, who fired a powerful shot into the net from inside the penalty area.

Algeria attempted to remain composed, with Rafik Belghali providing a pass to Riyad Mahrez, whose effort was blocked by the Swiss defense.

In the 58th minute, Algeria head coach Vladimir Petković made a double substitution in search of attacking solutions, introducing striker Amine Gouiri in place of Ramiz Zerrouki and Jaouen Hadjam for Houssem Aouar.

In the 71st minute, Petković made two further substitutions, bringing on Hicham Boudaoui for Nabil Bentaleb and Anis Hadj Moussa in place of Riyad Mahrez. However, the clearest chances continued to fall to Switzerland, which came very close to adding a third goal.
