Calls to boycott Qatar World Cup and to hold FIFA accountable.. What’s the story?


The head of the Norwegian Police Economic Crimes Unit (Akokrim) has urged the National Football Association to boycott next year’s World Cup in Qatar, and called on other countries to take the same position.

In a press statement, President Pal Lonseth claimed that what he described as “corruption” overshadowed the 2022 World Cup, stressing that “everyone must realize that corruption has consequences even in the sports sectors,” and he continued: “From the standpoint of fighting crime, Norway should boycott the World Cup in Qatar, and the world should do the same”, Europe’s aktarr reported.

 

World Cup workers in Qatar… Dozens dead in a few months Pal Lonseth added: “The sports sector must understand that we will see more corruption during the approval process for any subsequent sporting events, if we do not face the consequences of the current regulations enough to prevent this completely”.

In a Discovery Channel documentary called “The Men Who Sold The World Cup“, former FIFA President Sepp Blatter said that the board did not always follow rules in granting countries to host the tournament. Blatter said in the documentary: “FIFA is not corrupt, but people within FIFA are corrupt”.

“According to VG, since 22 FIFA administrators were granted approval to Qatar in 2010, 16 have either been suspended, charged, or sentenced to prison”.
