After 6 Years of Closure, Bourita Reopens Moroccan Embassy in Iraq

Iraq’s relations with Morocco will witness a new generation of diplomatic interaction, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein has said.

The Iraqi foreign minister made the remarks during a meeting with his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita in Baghdad on Saturday.

Bourita arrived in Baghdad today for a one-day visit, according to Iraqi media.

According to Iraqi Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmed Al-Sahhaf, Bourita will hold a series of meetings with Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al Sudani, Parliament Speaker Mohamed Al-Halbousi, and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein.

Al-Sahhaf said that the visit of Bourita will witness the re-opening of the Moroccan embassy in Baghdad.

Morocco closed its embassy in Iraq six years ago and transferred its duties to Jordan in February 2016, following the deterioration of security after ISIS seized a third of Iraq in 2014.
