Judge ordered the arrest of Karoui on a charge of corruption
On Thursday, a spokesman for the judicial court said that a judge ordered the arrest of Tunisian media mogul Nabil Karoui over suspicion of financial corruption.
It should be noted that Karoui is the leader of the Heart of Tunisia party, which is the second-largest party in parliament, and was previously a candidate for president. His party is one of the three parties that support the technocratic government in parliament.
TAP state news agency reported that Karoui was accused of tax evasion and money laundering, while Karoui’s aides and party officials were not instantly available to comment.
Indeed, Karoui was detained in August 2019, but he was released a few months later on October 9, amid the election, despite continuing the investigations about his case.
Otherwise, Karoui stated last year that he was self-assured of his innocence and that his political opponents, especially the Islamist Ennahda Party, were behind his imprisonment. He is currently an Ennahda ally in the parliament.
