The United Arab Emirates is the first country in the world to experience the expansion of the Internet
The United Arab Emirates has maintained its global lead in the “spread of the Internet among the total population” and “spread of social media among the total population”, according to the “Digital Status 2021” report released yesterday. It also ranked first regionally and 3 globally, with per capita GDP.
The UAE topped the world in the “spread of the Internet among the total population” and “spread of social media among the total population” in a report last year issued by Canada’s Hotspot platform, which specializes in social media management. What is new this year, however, is that the UAE has taken the lead in the “average speed of download of internet on mobile phones”, where it has moved ahead in comparison to last year’s report, which gave it second place.
Hotspot publishes the Digital Status report annually to monitor digitization conditions and the prevalence levels of modern communication technologies with their various tools in all countries of the world over the previous year.
This year’s release of the report reported that the UAE has continued its tremendous progress in the field of digitization by leading countries in several indicators.
The Internet penetration rate among the UAE’s total population reached 99% last year, the same percentage as last year’s report showed. The UAE remains the world’s number one internet penetrator.
In the United Arab Emirates, the number of web users was 9,841,208 in 2020, compared to 9,732,158 in 2019.
Second place on the index was Denmark, which has a 98.1% Internet penetration rate. Sweden came in third with 98%, while South Korea and Switzerland shared fourth with 98%.
At 99%, the UAE leads the world in the Social Media Prevalence Index, the same percentage as last year.
The number of social media users among the state’s population this year was 9.730.00, while the average number of personal social media accounts owned by each individual in the state ranging between the ages of 16 and 64 was 10.7 per person.
The UAE far outperformed its closest rival, South Korea, which again had a 89.3% penetration of social media among its population. The third place went to Taiwan, with a prevalence rate of 88.1%. With a prevalence of 88%, the Netherlands came in fourth, while Malaysia came third with a prevalence of 86%.
The UAE ranked first in the world on the “Average Speed of Loading Internet on Mobile Phones” index. The speed in the UAE was 177.52 Mbps. The UAE made a huge leap in this speed compared to last year, when the speed was 86.8 Mbps, which means that the UAE has more than doubled its mobile internet download speed in one year.
The UAE also ranked third in the world on the index “Percentage of Contributions to Broadband Telecommunications Services to Total Population”. Broadband means a band of multifrequency signals used in communications. This package covers generational, third, fourth and fifth communications technologies.
The percentage of broadband subscriptions to the total population of the UAE during the past year was 156%.
Hong Kong was the world leader, with 183.3% of the subscriptions, while Japan came second with 158.7% of the subscriptions.
Apart from digitization, in the same report, the UAE ranked first regionally and third globally, on par with Switzerland, in the per capita GDP, which the report calculated and compared world countries based on the premise of equal purchasing power among their peoples and the use of the US dollar to pay for purchases.
According to the report, the UAE’s per capita GDP was $70.089, the same as Switzerland’s. Singapore, with a per capita GDP of $101.649, was the first, while Ireland was the second, with $88.241 per capita.
