A war monitor: At least 64 Turkey-backed Syrians have been killed in Nagorno-Karabakh
A war monitor based on Britain reported in a new toll on Saturday that at least 64 pro-Turkey Syrian combatants have been killed in confrontations between Armenian and Azerbaijani forces about Nagorno-Karabakh.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights declared, updating its earlier figure of 850, they were among the 1,200 fighters from pro-Ankara Syrian factions that Turkey has sent to fight for the Azeris since last week. It added that at least 36 of them have been killed in confrontations in the past 48 hours alone, increasing a previous toll of 28 to 64.
It should be noted that Armenia accused Turkey of sending Syrian combatants to fight on the Azeri side in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, although Azerbaijani and Turkish dismissed that. Moreover, French President Emmanuel Macron demanded Friday that Turkey explain what he said was the arrival of terrorist combatants in Azerbaijan.
He also declared that Intelligence reports had affirmed that 300 Syrian combatants from jihadist groups from the Syrian city of Aleppo had passed via Gaziantep in Turkey to Azerbaijan.
The Syrian foreign ministry alerted in a statement on Saturday of blatant Turkish interference in the conflict. The statement, carried by the official SANA news agency reported that it aims to inflame the situation in a manner that is consistent with the Turkish regime’s behavior in more than one country, where it has created tension and fueled the fire of sedition.
Confrontations have started between Armenian and Azerbaijani forces since Sunday about Nagorno-Karabakh, which is an ethnic Armenian province that separated from Baku in a severe war in the 1990s.
