Five people were killed and dozens injured, ten of them critically, in wildfires that broke out in several villages in southeastern Turkey overnight, according to the health minister on Friday.

According to AFP, Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca wrote on the platform “X”: “Five people were killed, and 44 others were injured, ten of them critically,” when the fire swept through areas near the city of Mardin in southeastern Turkey.

Footage shared on social media showed a massive fire lighting up the night sky with large clouds of smoke.

Koca explained that four emergency teams and 35 ambulances were dispatched to the site.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya stated that the fire broke out late Thursday in an area about 30 kilometers south of Diyarbakır and spread quickly due to strong winds, reaching five villages.

He added on X: “Unfortunately, three residents from the Diyarbakır area and two from the Mardin area lost their lives.”
