Nothing will deter me from defeating Iran: Trump describes the White House correspondents’ dinner attacker as a lone wolf
U.S. President Donald Trump revealed new details about the shooting that occurred during the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, which he attended in person.
Trump affirmed that the gunfire during the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner would not deter him from the war against Iran, although he believes the incident is likely unrelated to it.
Speaking to reporters at the White House after the incident, Trump said: “This will not deter me from victory in the war against Iran. I do not know whether it has any connection to it; I do not believe so based on what we know.”
He had previously stated: “You can never know” whether the incident is linked to the war against Iran, noting that investigators are working to determine the shooter’s motives, whom he described as a “lone wolf.”
During a press conference at the White House, Trump confirmed that the shooter attacked security checkpoints using multiple weapons.
As his press conference began, he posted on his Truth Social account a photo of the attacker lying on the ground with his hands handcuffed behind his back, surrounded by security personnel.
He also shared a video showing the beginning of the attack, in which the shooter appears rushing through one of the hotel’s security perimeters before being chased by officers.
Trump explained that the attacker, in his thirties, is ill and from the state of California, noting that he used a powerful weapon during the attack.
He said, “I call on Americans to resolve their differences peacefully,” adding that the attacker most likely acted alone, though this will be verified.
He also stated that a security officer was shot but is in very good condition.
Responding to a question about whether he was the intended target, Trump said, “I believe so,” adding that “security services believe the attacker acted alone, and I believe that as well.”
For his part, Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche said: “Investigations are ongoing and charges will be filed shortly in this shooting incident,” noting that law enforcement agencies are working to obtain search warrants.
He added that two charges have been brought against the suspect and that he will appear in court on Monday.
