A representative of “Squid Game” convicted of sexual assault
South Korean actor Oh Yeong-su, one of the stars of the Netflix series “Squid Game,” has been convicted of sexual assault against a woman in 2017, according to the prosecutor’s office of the Agence France-Presse, Friday.
In 2022, the 79-year-old actor became the first South Korean to win a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in a TV Series for his role as a frail old man in the series that achieved overwhelming global success on Netflix.
According to AFP, the prosecutor’s office in the Suwon region, south of Seoul, said he was sentenced to eight months in prison, suspended for two years, and must also complete 40 hours of training on preventing sexual violence.
An investigation was opened after Oh Yeong-su was accused in 2022 of sexually assaulting a woman – whose identity has not been revealed – twice five years ago.
The story of “Squid Game” is a critique of the global capitalist system, featuring participants in brutal children’s games who kill each other in hopes of winning millions. The series remains one of the most popular in Netflix history, having attracted over a hundred million viewers since its release in 2021.
