Additional U.S. Sanctions on Iran: Hormuz Opens a New Front of Pressure
The U.S. Treasury Department announced that the United States has imposed new sanctions on Iran.
The new sanctions target an alleged entity established by Iran under the pretext of managing the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran has obstructed navigation through the international strait, while the United States has imposed a naval blockade on Iran.
In a statement, the Treasury Department said that anyone cooperating with the alleged entity would thereby be providing support to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps and receiving services from it, making them subject to sanctions.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said, “The Iranian military’s latest attempts to extort global maritime trade demonstrate that the economic pressure campaign has left the regime in desperate need of cash liquidity.”
On Thursday, the United States launched strikes against Iran targeting drone-launching platforms in Bandar Abbas in southern Iran, and also shot down four Iranian drones.
