Libya: Strong Warning to TikTok Celebrities

TikTok celebrities and influencers in Libya have received a strong warning following a joint statement issued by several human rights organizations in the country. The statement strongly condemns the rise of vulgar content and offensive, unethical videos on the platform, describing them as a “serious harm to both children and adults.”

The organizations stated that they had observed videos of Libyan influencers broadcasting live, speaking, and acting inappropriately, violating societal values in the country. They also denounced the exploitation of children and minors, exposing them to bullying and ridicule in order to increase view counts.

They added that the spread of such inappropriate content coincides with the emergence of “signs of addiction” among TikTok users, particularly teenagers, due to the lack of parental supervision and the absence of proper educational media for children.

TikTok is one of the most widely used social media platforms in Libya, attracting millions of users from different age groups, especially young people and teenagers. However, with its growing popularity, concerns have emerged about its impact on society, leading to calls for a ban on the app, claiming that it promotes “moral decline” and encourages inappropriate behavior.

On the other hand, many people oppose the idea of banning the app, arguing that it would constitute a restriction on the freedoms of communication and expression provided by social media.
