Powerful Earthquake Hits Papua Region in Indonesia

The Indonesian Geophysics Agency reported that a 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck the Papua region on Friday.

It ruled out the possibility of tsunami waves.

According to the agency, the earthquake’s epicenter was at a depth of 10 kilometers.
Indonesia is located in a zone known as the “Pacific Ring of Fire,” an area of high seismic activity situated above several tectonic plates, as indicated by the region’s geological characteristics and volcanic activity.

Numerous small-scale earthquakes occur regularly due to the convergence of large tectonic plates in the region. Based on records from the US Geological Survey, Indonesia experienced over 150 earthquakes with magnitudes exceeding 7 between 1901 and 2019.
