Trump Puts Iran’s Kharg Island Back in the Spotlight Through AI-Generated Images
U.S. President Donald Trump has reignited controversy surrounding Iran’s Kharg Island after publishing a series of AI-generated images on Sunday.
The images were posted on the Truth Social platform and focused on Iran’s energy infrastructure and maritime trade, at a time when tensions had eased following nearly two weeks of reciprocal strikes.
One of the images attracted particular attention because it carried the caption “Strike on Kharg Island,” a direct reference to Iran’s main crude oil export hub. According to Newsweek magazine, Trump has presented the site as a potential target for nearly four decades.
The posts also included other images, including one depicting an oil facility being hit by airstrikes and engulfed in large explosions, and another showing an Iranian-flagged oil tanker burning at sea under the caption “No More Engines.” Another image showed Trump and U.S. military personnel raising the American flag aboard an Iranian tanker, accompanied by the caption, “It’s our oil tanker now!”
The posts contained no political explanation, instead relying solely on visual messages targeting Iran’s oil sector and maritime shipping network.
The images are the latest indication that Kharg Island continues to feature prominently in Trump’s rhetoric toward Iran, as debate persists within U.S. political and military circles over whether striking the island would strengthen Washington’s negotiating position or push the region toward a broader confrontation.
Located approximately 32 kilometers off Iran’s southern coast, Kharg Island is Iran’s main crude oil export terminal. The majority of the country’s oil exports pass through the island, which also hosts extensive storage facilities capable of accommodating very large crude carriers. Its strategic importance has made it a recurring target, particularly during the Iran-Iraq War.
Trump has long described the island as “the crown jewel of Tehran,” a characterization that dates back to remarks he made in 1988 during an interview with The Guardian. At the time, he said: “One bullet fired at one of our men or our ships, and I will completely destroy Kharg Island. I will invade it and take it.”
This year, he again referred to those remarks, emphasizing that his position toward Iran had not changed since the 1980s.
U.S. Dispute Over the Merits of Targeting the Island
Trump’s posts have revived debate within the United States over whether targeting Kharg Island would be strategically worthwhile. Supporters of a hard-line approach argue that putting pressure on the island, which serves as the economic heart of Iran’s oil exports, could provide Washington with significant leverage in any future negotiations with Tehran. Several Republicans support this position.
By contrast, officials and security experts warn that any attempt to seize or occupy the island could expose U.S. forces to sustained attacks from Iran’s nearby mainland.
Joe Kent, the former director of the National Counterterrorism Center, has been among the prominent voices warning about such a scenario, arguing that taking control of the island would be far more complicated than simply carrying out military strikes against it.
The debate gained further momentum earlier this month after retired General Frank McKenzie, the former commander of U.S. Central Command, called for the option of taking control of the island to be examined. He argued that the U.S. military possesses the capability to carry out such an operation and that holding Iranian territory could provide Washington with additional leverage in any future negotiations.
These developments coincided with Trump’s confirmation on Friday that U.S.-Iran negotiations were continuing, while keeping the option of resuming military strikes on the table. At the same time, the United States halted its attacks on Iran for a second consecutive day, while an Iranian military spokesman also announced a suspension of military operations.
Although Trump’s posts contain no indication of an imminent military operation, the decision to bring Kharg Island back into the spotlight at this particular moment reflects its continued status as one of the most significant potential sources of leverage in any future confrontation between Washington and Tehran.
