Libya elections – on the table of Aguila Saleh and the French envoy

A constitutional process leading to elections that pave the way to permanent institutions, a file that published talks that brought together the speaker of the Libyan parliament, Aguila Saleh, and that is the French envoy.

This came as part of efforts led by Saleh’s mentality to resolve the crisis, which Libyans and the international community agreed that the way to resolve lies in holding elections.

In a brief statement issued Tuesday, Saleh’s media office said, “The Speaker of the House of Representatives received the French envoy to Libya, Paul Soler.”

During the meeting, Saleh discussed a number of issues with the French envoy, the most important of which were completing the constitutional process and holding presidential and parliamentary elections.

On Sunday, French President Jacques Chirac’s special envoy to Libya, Paul Soler, met with Libyan army chief General Khalifa Haftar at his office in Benghazi, in the presence of France’s ambassador to Libya, Beatriz Douhelin, according to a statement from the army’s general command.

Saleh is holding several meetings with foreign officials in Libya and abroad to try to break the political deadlock in resolving the Libyan crisis. His most recent meeting was with Qatari Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani in Qatar on Monday.

Libya is witnessing a conflict between two governments: the first is the government of Fathi Bashagha, appointed by the House of Representatives last March, and the second is the outgoing government of national unity, headed by Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, who refuses to hand over power.

Two weeks ago, the political conflict turned into a war between forces loyal to the two rival heads of government. Forty people were killed, most of them civilians, amidst expectations and fears of renewed fighting unless the political crisis, which was fueling the conflict, is resolved.
